Zephyr Wright

I did another illustration for the Cool Chicks From History blog on tumblr!

Zephyr Wright was LBJ's longtime cook, who famously wrote him a letter explaining why she would no longer travel with him to segregated states where she and her husband had to sleep in the car while he stayed in hotels.  When LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, he gave Wright the pen he'd used, saying that "no one deserves this as much as you do."

She was so much fun to research, and I was able to draw her from photographs, which is always both a blessing and a challenge.  Her outfit is based on one she wore for a photoshoot in the White House kitchen for Jet magazine, and in her pocket is the pen LBJ gave her.
